Select Inspection by Risk and Acceptance Need

Winworth plans inspection for custom copper and alloy components against the approved drawing, material specification, manufacturing route, component function, and purchase-order requirements. The purpose of an inspection method is to answer a defined acceptance question, not to create the longest possible test list.

Specify the characteristic to verify, stage of manufacture, examined area, sampling or coverage, method and procedure, sensitivity or technique where relevant, acceptance criteria, witness point, report format, and traceability requirement.

Material Verification

Material verification may include review of material certificates and heat or batch identity, chemical composition, electrical conductivity, hardness, oxygen content, mechanical properties, heat-treatment records, or metallographic examination when technically applicable and ordered.

The required property depends on the exact material grade, product form, condition, processing history, sampling location, and governing specification. A result from a test coupon or source material does not automatically prove every characteristic of the finished component.

Dimensional and Visual Inspection

Dimensional inspection may use calibrated hand instruments, gauges, templates, coordinate measurement, scanning, or large-component measurement methods selected for the feature size, tolerance, accessibility, surface, temperature, and required uncertainty.

The inspection plan should identify datums, critical dimensions, fits, geometric controls, contact or sealing faces, channel and connection locations, report points, sampling, and whether raw data or a summarized report is required. Visual inspection should define surface condition, workmanship criteria, lighting or magnification where required, and the stage before coatings or assembly obscure the examined area.

Nondestructive Examination

PT is used for discontinuities open to the surface on suitable nonporous materials. It does not establish subsurface soundness, and indications require interpretation and separate acceptance criteria. MT is not suitable for copper and most copper alloys because they are not ferromagnetic.

UT, RT, and ET answer different questions. UT depends on geometry, surface condition, sound path, material structure, calibration, and procedure. RT depends on section geometry, technique, image quality, access, and radiation controls. ET depends on electrical conductivity, geometry, frequency, probe access, calibration standards, and the discontinuity sought.

The order must define the applicable method, procedure or standard, examined volume or surface, scanning plan, technique, calibration, personnel qualification, recording, and acceptance criteria. Listing an NDT method does not prove it is suitable for a specific component.

Pressure, Leak, and Functional Checks

Water-cooled or pressure-containing components may require hydrostatic, pneumatic, pressure-decay, flow, passage, or helium leak testing when the design and order call for it. The responsible parties must define test medium, cleanliness, pressure or vacuum, temperature, hold time, allowable leakage, instrumentation, safety controls, drying, preservation, and acceptance.

A component pressure or leak test does not validate complete-system design pressure, flow distribution, cooling capacity, controls, interlocks, installation, or fitness for service.

Inspection Records

The final documentation package may include an inspection and test plan, material records, traceability list, dimensional report, NDT reports, test records, calibration evidence, personnel qualification evidence where required, photographs, deviation approvals, and a final record index.

Confirm before quotation which documents require buyer review, approval, hold, witness, or third-party attendance. Specialized methods or laboratory work are confirmed for the specific order, and the records must identify the actual performing and reviewing parties.
